Tamborine Mountain
Known as "The Green behind the Gold", this lush mountain plateau is only a scenic 30 minute drive from the Gold Coast. From the top of the mountain enjoy breathtaking views of the hinterland ranges and the bright lights of the Gold Coast.
This volcanic plateau perched 560m above sea level protects no fewer than 19 National Parks and Native Reserves. Here you'll find Queensland's oldest National Park - Witches Falls.
While the National Parks are well-provided with picnic facilities, you may prefer to sample the local cuisine at one of the cafes on the Gallery Walk or browse the vast collection of cottage industries, art galleries, craft shops and plant nurseries.
The 100-year old township of Canungra owes its existence to the cedargetters and sawmillers of yesteryear. The town is regarded as the springboard to Lamington National Park and the Parks of Tamborine Mountain.
Adventurous visitors can learn to hang glide, try a paraglide or take a horse trek through the picturesque Biddaddaba Valley or to O'Reilly's Plateau. Canungra has become a haven for vibrant artists and craftsmen. Visit the local Galleries or take in one of the local wineries.
The Scenic Rim
Surrounded by the World Heritage-listed wilderness of the McPherson Range, the Scenic Rim is a vast region of mountains, rainforests, valleys and rolling plains.
A one hour drive from Brisbane or a half hour drive from the Gold Coast can take you to World Heritage Wilderness, a great fishing spot on a fish-stocked dam, or to any of the 29 National Parks and Reserves in the region.
For lovers of the outdoors, this natural playground offers exceptional bushwalking, challenging rock climbing, fishing, four-wheel driving and horse riding.
Nestled amidst the wilderness reserves, country towns offer visitors an exciting range of art galleries, excellent restaurants and craft shops - just perfect for spending lazy days.
Tamborine National Park
This pristine park includes Queensland's first National Park, declared in 1908 at Witches Falls. Since then, 7 sections of land on the Tamborine plateau and the surrounding foothills have been added to the protected area.
Especially popular with day trippers, the park reserves have 160km of graded walking tracks and excellent picnic facilities.
Lamington National Park
Subtropical rainforest, magnificent views, waterfalls and colourful wildlife make this park one of the most popular in southern Queensland. This is also the largest preserved natural stand of subtropical rainforest in Australia.
On the highest peaks, walk amidst ancient forests of 2000 year old Antarctic beech trees.
Springbrook National Park
Magnificent waterfalls plunge over the plateau edge into rainforest and eucalypt forest far below. The walk to Waringa Pool underneath the stunning Purlingbrook Falls is recommended. In another section of the park at Natural Bridge off the Murwillumbah to Nerang road, water plunges through the roof of a cave, forming an icy swimming pool. At night, millions of glow worms light up the cave.
